Very few people get a chance in their life time to inspire others in such a way that their guidance keeps leading people for centuries. Poet of the East (شاعر مشرق) Allama Dr. Muhammad Iqbal was one of such very few people. His own verse (شعر) fits 100% on him.
He opened his eyes on 9th November 1877 in the famous city of Sialkot, which was a part of combined India at that time. Iqbal was a very intelligent student and he reached up to the level of doctorate in his field of study; law. He graduated from Government College, Lahore. He became Barrister of law from Lincoln’s Inn, UK. Later he earned his PhD degree from Ludwig Maximilian University in Germany. Then he came back to India for taking part in the struggle for independence. He and Muhammad Ali Jinnah (Quaid-e-Azam) played a great role for paving pathway for Pakistan’s foundation. Both played important role from the platform of All India Muslim League. Dr. Iqbal had visioned that Muslims would never be living peacefully and happy under the Hindus’ government in India after the English rule in India. Unfortunately Iqbal could not see Pakistan in his lifetime as he passed away in 1938, 9 years before independence of Pakistan.
Allama Iqbal played a great role in awaking the Muslims living in sub-continent through his exceptionally good poetry. His verses played magic on the hearts of disappointed and hopeless Muslims and they joined their great leaders in the their movement for an independent Islamic state. Iqbal was the person who proposed idea of having an independent and sovereign Islamic state. Later Jinnah fulfilled his dream.
Today Pakistan is facing many too many problems. Lack of good leadership is a big reason of our problems. I wish that Sir Allama Iqbal would be there to once again unite us as one nation. His Urdu and Persian poetry gives messages of self-determination and firm belief in Allah. His famous poetry books include Baang-e-Dara (بانگ درا), Baal-e-Jibraeel (بال جبرائیل), Armaghan-e-Hijaz (ارمغان حجاز), Piyam-e-Mashriq (پیام مشرق) and Javed Nama (جاوید نامہ). Dr. Iqbal also introduced the concept of ‘Reconstruction of religious thought in Islam’. He had great knowledge of real teachings of Islam. He passed away on 21st April 1938 in Lahore and was buried near Badshahi Masjid, Lahore where a beautiful tomb was constructed later by the government of Pakistan.
